Quick facts about Zanzibar ? Zanzibar is popularly known as the "spice islands." Zanzibar is located about 30 K off the coast of mainland Tanzania in the Indian Ocean . Zanzibar is actually an archipelago with the two main Islands of Zanzibar (also known as Unguja, the larger one) and Pemba (the smaller of the two). Zanzibar was incorporated into the United Republic of Tanzania in 1964. Zanzibar , which in 1992 had only 723,300 people, does have its own democratically elected president and government that run the internal affairs of the Islands . Zanzibar 's Serena Inn on the Stone Town waterfront is a splendid example of the careful preservation of historic buildings. This project undertaken by the Aga Kahn Fund for Economic Development, owner and manager of the Serena Hotels , involved the restoration and rehabilitation of two historic buildings , the Old Extelcoms Building and the Chinese Doctors' Residence. Zanzibar has the largest number of carved doors in East Africa . Zanzibar 's Stone Town has 50 mosques and four Hindu temples. The House of Wonders is one of the first buildings in East Africa to have electricity and Stone Town 's oldest existing building. In 1987, the Stone Town Conservation Authority was created to provide strict guidelines for architectural design and materials used in all renovations of public and privately owned buildings. • Zanzibar is the world's oldest functioning Swahili city. • Zanzibar has seen an influx from the British, Dutch, Portuguese, Egyptian, Phoenicians, Assyrians, Indians, Chinese, Persians, Arabs and Sumerians at various times in its history. Zanzibar offers the visitor a variety of pristine beaches and stunning coral reefs. Zanzibar 's Muslim worshippers, during daylight hours of Ramadan lunar month, may not eat, drink, smoke or have sex. Exempt only are the sick, young children and travelers . The earliest visitation to Zanzibar was in the 8th century, when the Arab traders arrived. Zanzibar 's oldest remaining building is the 11th century mosque at Kizimkazi . The name Swahili comes from the Arab word sawahil which means 'coast'.

The half-day city tour visits Zanzibar 's colourful market, which exudes a heady smell of herbs and spices. Other sites visited include the Anglican Cathedral, which stands in silent testimony on the site of one of the last open slave markets in the world, the residence of the late Sultan of Zanzibar; 'Tip Tip House'. The Old Fort and the House of Wonders - all locations rich in antiquity and full of intrigue from the days of long ago. The tour ends with a romantic stroll along the narrow lanes of the Old Stone Town .

Jozani is the only remaining natural forest on Ungunja Island . Covering an area of 10 sq km it consists of high forest, swamp forest and evergreen forest. It provides an important refuge for the remaining Ungula fauna such as the rare Red Colobus Monkeys, small Zanzibar Leopard and two antelope species - the Zanzibar Duicker and Sunni.
Changuu Island is a historical island once used for the detention of recalcitrant salves. Today Giant Tortoises, some over 100 years old, act as unlikely vigilantes over the island. The beach is superb and the crystal clear sea excellent for swimming, snorkeling, fishing and diving. This trip is perfect to while away a complete day.
Day 1: Meet and greet After arrival and being met at the Zanzibar International Airport or Seaport, we drive to Mbweni ruins where we take a motorised boat to Chumbe Island . Chumbe Island is a unique nature travel destination on a private island in Zanzibar , Tanzania . Situated 8 km Southwest of Zanzibar town, it is covered by an undisturbed forest and surrounded by a virgin coral reef. The island can be reached in a 30-45 minute boat ride from the Mbweni beach departure point south of Stone town. Dinner and stay overnight at Chumbe Private Bungalows. F/B Day 2: Chumbe Excursions To day ( After taking breakfast) we have planned to show you the Chumbe Reef Sanctuary: The sanctuary has more than 200 species of pristine stone corals, more than 400 species of fish and regularly visiting turtles and dolphins. This spectacular reef can be observed by snorkeling under the guidance of trained Park Rangers. In the evening you can visit the Chumbe Forest Reserve : a coral rag forest with a unique flora and wildlife including numerous reptiles, birds, crabs and the rare nocturnal Coconut Crab. The Forest Nature Trails are also visited under the guidance of trained Park Rangers, on the way you will also visit the historic buildings : built by the British in 1904; these include the lighthouse, which offers breath-taking views of the Island and of Zanzibar, and the mosque that was built with an elaborate design and is still in use by the Chumbe team. Dinner and overnight stay at Chumbe Private Bungalows. F/B Day 3: Relaxation This is your leisure day, you have to relax and get yourselves prepared for your tomorrow's transfer to Sau Inn Beach Hotel. Dinner and overnight stay at Chumbe Private Bungalows. F/B Day 4: East coast After breakfast, we take a motor boat to Mbweni ruins Hotel where we meet our driver and tour guide. From there, we drive direct to East coast with jozani forest tour enroute. Jozani Forest is the home of the red colobus monkeys, a rare species found only in Zanzibar . Other species include Sykes monkeys, small buck, chameleon and bush pigs. Jozani has excellent nature trails and the guides are well trained and informative. A walk through this impressive flora and fauna is one of the highlights Zanzibar has to offer. It takes just 45 minutes drive from Mbweni Ruins. In the afternoon we continue with our safari to East coast and arrive at Sau Inn Beach Hotel for lunch and leisure. Dinner and overnight stay at Sau Inn. B/B Day 5: Dolphin Adventure We take our breakfast in the morning and start driving to Kizimkazi Village for Dolphin Tour. This full day excursion will take you to the southern part of zanzibar about one and half an hour drive from the hotel. After swimming and playing with the very friendly dolphins for several hours you will have automatically been given a chance of admiring the wonderful coral reef, Variety of coloured fishes and other attractive marine creatures through snorkeling before getting back to the beach for shower, lunch and beach relaxation. The rich waters of Kizimkazi provide a natural breeding habitat for dolphins and an ideal place for dolphin watching. Spinner dolphins, common dolphins and the false killer whales are the three main dolphins species found here. In the late evening we drive back to the hotel. Dinner and overnight stay at Sau Inn. B/B Day 6 – 8 Leisure days. Day 9: Shopping Day 9: End of Tour We drive you back to airport or seaport. The price given are net and includes the following:3 days full board accommodation at Chumbe island, 5 nights accommodation based on B/B at Sau Inn, 1 night accommodation based on B/B at Tembo House Hotel, guide services on tours and transfers, travel permits, 1 bottle of water per person while on transfers and tours, snorkeling equipments and boat at Chumbe and on dolphin tour, lunch on dolphin tour, VAT, all government tax, all entrance fees and all tours and transfers as per itinerary.
